Keira Knightley by blacklady-vip Keira Knightley by blacklady-vip
I really love the hairstyle and the make-up she had that evening so I decided to draw that.

I hate scanners. I don't know if it's only this one I have or all scanners give such a bad result. I changed the brightness and contrast digital.
As you can see, I got lazy with her neck ^^;

Pencils I used: HB, 3H and a black color pencil

I think you've made her prettier, if it's possible.

Scanners suck. Believe me, I have the same problem! Either way, she turned out very nice! I especially love her hair. Well done!

Hehe, I'm in a way glad that I'm not the only one who has a problem with scanners (I first thought, I've got a cheesy one)

I've owned 2 scanners in my life and all told I've used probably 6 of them, and ALL OF THEM SUCK! I always have to adjust the image settings (shadows, midtones, gamma, etc.) when scanning. Every. Single. Time.

my greatest problem is the brightness. I colimate it as the minimum but black looks already like a medium grey tone.

Same here. Personally, I hate my drawings looking too white and washed out. I would rather have it too dark than too light. It's gotten to the point where I've started purposely making my drawings a lot darker than the reference image calls for because I'm so sick of doing a ton of adjustments in the scanning stage. Take a look at my drawings of Bam Margera and April Margera for example. I think they look pretty good on here, but the actual drawings are a bit darker in reality than on here, and even with that I STILL had to do adjustments in the scanning stage. Those two drawings are darker than most of my other portraits.

I think it's quite difficult to make drawings darker, it needs much more time and much more pencil :D

The drawings you mentioned are awesome! I think it's really hard to draw such expressions ^^ Very good work :)

Trust me, there's a VERY fine line when making them darker because you run the risk of ruining the picture by "changing" it. Meaning, in the examples I gave you, I could have totally changed their facial expressions if I wasn't careful (and sometimes when I look at them, I think I have, but others not so much). I wonder though if that's only something that I notice because I know they're darker than they should be. You know what I mean?

Yeah, I really can understand you. It doesn't need much to change an expression, just a shadow a bit darker on the top of the nose and the person looks angry. When I was younger, this happened to me very often. I wanted to get my nearly finished drawing more detailed and finer, and then it looked different from what I wanted it to look ^^
